Key Features:

  • This public Wi-Fi access network interface is known as PM-WANI. The PM-WANI ecosystem will be run by the various organizations mentioned here:
  • Public Data Office (PDO): They will only install, maintain and operate WANI compliant Wi-Fi access points as well as provide broadband services to subscribers.
  • Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA): They will be the aggregator of PDOs and handle authentication as well as accounting related operations.
  • App Provider: They will create an app for the user to register and find compatible Wi-Fi hotspots for WANI in the surrounding area and display it in the app to gain access to Internet services.
  • Central Registry: It will keep details of app provider, PDOA, and PDO. From the beginning the Central Registry will be maintained by C-DoT.

Purposes

  • PDO will not require any registration for PDOA and the app provider will be able to register with DoT through DoT's online registration portal (SARALSANCHAR; https://saralsanchar.gov.in) without any registration fee. Registration will be validated within 7 days after application.
  • It is expected that this business will be more convenient and suitable for easy business. The Covid-19 epidemic has created a need to provide stable and high speed broadband internet (data) service to a very large growing number of subscribers across the country, including areas where 4G mobile coverage is not available. This need can be met by installing public Wi-Fi.
  • In addition, the spread of public Wi-Fi will not only create jobs but also increase disposable income in the hands of small and medium enterprises to boost the country's GDP as a whole.
  • The proliferation of broadband services through public Wi-Fi is a step towards digital India and its consequential benefits.
  • No license fee will be charged for broadband internet service provided using public Wi-Fi hotspots which will give a huge boost to its spread and establish it across the country. The availability and use of broadband will increase income, employment and quality of life, ease of doing business, etc.
